The oil pressure sensor monitors the performance of the oil pump and sends this information to the engine control unit (ECU) on computer-controlled vehicles or directly to the oil pressure gauge on your instrument cluster for non (ECU) equipped vehicles. When lower than normal oil pressure is detected, the pressure sensor sends this info to the (ECU) or makes the gauge in the car reflect this change. Without the proper amount of oil, your engine will sustain major damage. Multiple systems in your car are designed to maintain the correct engine oil level and pressure. In order for the engine computer to regulate the flow of oil, the oil pressure sensor needs to work correctly.

What does the Oil Pressure Sensors do?

Where are the Oil Pressure Sensors located?
The oil pressure sensor is typically located near the bottom or side of an engine, between the oil filter and the oil pan.

A faulty oil pressure sensor may cause a check engine light or low oil pressure light due to sensing incorrect oil pressure readings.
What are the common causes of failure?
Excessively dirty oil and cause the sensor diaphragm to clog or rupture as well as a loose electrical contact
How to determine if an Oil Pressure Sensor is failing?
A failing oil pressure sensor will usually cause a check engine light, low oil pressure light, or show low or no oil pressure on the oil pressure gauge. On some vehicles, the low oil pressure light will blink when failing.
